Customization- The Joy of Homeownership

How sick and tired are you of seeing the same cookie cutter homes with the same light beige stucco exterior? I mean nothing about your gray apartment building screams you, and was your landlord seriously just telling you to not put plants on your patio? Not to even mention pet deposits and having no outdoor space for your furry friends. If you’ve experienced any of the above you may be interested in homeownership which comes with the ability to customize your space however you see fit! This was definitely a big factor for my husband and I when we purchased our home.

Home customization can be such an amazing way to create your perfect space. You can make your home a reflection of your personality and here’s the thing- every room doesn’t have to look the exact same! Take my home for instance, every single room has its own design, sure this isn’t ideal for everyone but we are unconventional people and love how unique each space is. Here are some easy ways to customize your space and really make your home your own:

  • Paint- Both your interior and exterior paint can be an expression of you ( if you live in an HOA you probably have waaaaay less flexibility with exterior colors and design). What colors bring you joy? Do you want your space to be subtle or bold? If you go for subtle neutral colors what about an accent wall? Accent walls are hot and have really brought wall paper back into the conversation.
  • Flooring- For resale it’s best to have that same flooring throughout the majority of your home so if you are choosing LVP or hardwood keep it consistent throughout if you foresee yourself selling down the road. I’m guilty of not doing this but when we remodel a room we do it as our budget allows and personally don’t like taking out loans or using credit to do so- by the time we get to the next room the flooring we choose tends to have been upgraded and not a perfect match!
  • Landscaping- I for one am a plant fanatic! The more jungly I can create our outdoor space the better! Plants bring me peace and help create a tranquil atmosphere. I personally live in CA where droughts are plentiful so low maintenance drought resistant plants are a must!
  • Art and Furniture- Art and furniture let you further express yourself and your aesthetic. What color palettes speak to you? What mood are you trying to create with your art? What style of furniture are you drawn to? What about textures, what materials feel cozy and comfy to you? All of these details allow you to really hone into your character and express it to the fullest.
  • Pet Spaces- Pet spaces can go far beyond just a kennel or a litter box. My husband and I are pet lovers and have curated spaces specifically for our pet babies! Our cats enjoy the luxury of staying far away from the dogs with their own cat walk. It extends throughout our home and outside into our backyard with their very own cat patios to keep an eye on our alley! In addition to this, what started as a small Covid project has turned into a massive 3,000 gallon koi pond equipped with a glass tunnel to join the two ponds!

As you can see sky’s the limit when it comes to curating your personal space. Customization is one of the many benefits of homeownership that renting doesn’t afford you. If you are called to creating your own sanctuary pinterest can be a great place to start getting ideas while you are preparing to buy.
